Autograph

I watched a regional (Bengali) film yesterday and it compelled me to write down my feelings about the same. The film’s name is Autograph and the name itself signifies that the film describes the reel world.  Just like all artists scribble autographs for fans and engrave their presence in our hearts, this film etches the complete traits of each character and indeed reveals the individual they are. This is like a reflection of each character encompassing the plot of the film. Hence the film was named Autograph.
The protagonist of the film is Arun Chatterjee who is a leading actor and not finding enough opportunities in the industry so he is mostly seen in budget films which have moderate reviews at box-office and the target audience is also all and sundry and those films really don’t touch any of the intellectual strings of the mass.
Shuvo is an aspiring director who has left his job for giving shape to his dream. The only achievement he possesses is a directorial debut with a documentary. He has a script handy which is inspired by the famous Bengali film Nayak by Satyajit Ray (Oscar Winner) and by another piece of work called Wild Strawberries. He has a girlfriend who is living his dream and is helping him with all means.
Her name is Srinandita and she has been with Shuvo since college. She lives in with him and also agrees for playing the lead female in the film without any prior experience of the silver-screen.
The film begins with Arun Chatterjee being criticized by people as an actor of the bygone era so he deliberately needs a good script to showcase the real actor in him. He decides to give Shuvo a break and also gives him the liberty to cast other actors and vehemently decides to produce the film. The situation is such that if the film works then Arun, Shuvo and Srinandita all rise together or they stay where they are. Shuvo suddenly turns maverick and becomes obsessed with ambition. All he wants is success and for that he is also ready to gulp down the growing intimacy between his lady love Srinandita (also female lead in his film) and Arun Chatterjee. One day while Shuvo was away Srinandita was busy with her daily play rehearsals in front of the Handy-Cam when Arun arrives drunk and makes some heartfelt confessions of his guilt in front of her. She consoles him by saying that a mistake is humane but only a good human being would accept it. Shuvo takes a glance at the recorded piece and promises Srinandita that he would never disclose it. While the film was almost done Shuvo was busy with some post production work but also in search of making his film big. The only possible way of doing so was to create some controversy about Arun Chatterjee with the recording and that’s exactly what he does. When Srinandita comes to know of it she initially doesn’t believe his words and keeps on asking him about the same. When she is sure she decides to annihilate everything and go off to the hills of Darjeeling to find solace. Arun Chatterjee comes to know of it and summons Shuvo. Shuvo tells him that it is just a publicity stunt to make the film big. Arun Chatterjee tells him that he had been signing low-budget films for money lately and sacrificed on his artistic self for a living but had never sold his soul. So any attack on his principles and values would never be entertained and so he scraps the film. Shuvo also mentions that Srinandita was not involved in any of the controversies and she had also left for the unknown after the mess. Arun feels sorry for her and develops immense respect for her as well. After Shuvo’s dream script gets scrapped he starts afresh by approaching a leading commercial film producer but now he is a changed man who has given up all and wants to live his dream of making his presence in the reel world at any cost.
On the whole I loved the script but there are some questions which came to mind regarding the characters. If Shuvo was so obsessed with his ambition, would it be possible that Srinandita in so many years could never gauge his desperation for success? If Shuvo was not such a human being then would it be possible for him to change over-night into a person devoid of feelings and morals.
Srinandita emerges as a very idealistic individual being loyal to all relationships in her life but she disappears in the end when all relationships and situations are messed up. If a person is high on principles then why would he/she escape from such a situation? It would have been better if she had stood up and exerted her take on the situation.
Arun Chatterjee seemed reasonable by not allowing the film to release but what happens to him in the end? What happens to his career or is it assumed that he will continue with the moderate box-office releases for a living and find soulful pleasure in the fact that he is not compromising on his ideals? Or will he have a big hit which will bring glory to his dilapidated artistic soul?
The film’s conclusion could have been a little more concise and comprehensive. It expects the viewers to have conclusions in their own way. A better end would have been able to convey the message of the film in a better way and acquaint the viewers to something more enlightening and tangible.

THE FOUNTAINHEAD

The world is divided into two parts- Those who have read FountainHead and those who haven’t. In very simple words FountainHead is a saga of real and unreal characters. It also redefines religion and moral values. Every human being has two shades inside his soul- The good and the bad. This book explores all the shades of human character and incorporates them into characters of the story. We find characters like Toohey, Peter Keating, Guy Francon and Katie in real life but we don’t chance upon Howard Roark or Dominique Francon. Roark and Dominique are composed of virtues we always want to possess. They set expectations for themselves and live upto them inspite of all hardships and obstacles in their way. This is how an individual should be- Rigid in values not in character. All the other characters in the book are like common man-unsure of themselves, resorting to tact to get to their destination and never being content with it. This book also brings a revolution in terms of religious thoughts. Religion is defined by human beings and it is practised best when we live up to our responsibilities and moral values. The essence of theism lies in human virtues and not in worshipping deities or reading psalms. Both Roark and Dominique are strong atheists but they never wrong others and they never question their conscience about their deeds because it is always their conscience which prompts them to act in every situation. These two characters are epitome of virtues and spiritual solace. Whenever they say “I am not sure”, it is not that they are confused but they want to say “I don’t know how to convince you or make you understand”. They are very composed in nature and mature in thoughts. They despise attention, fame, wealth and prosperity and experience victory in soulful pleasure. Success and Happiness is always relative- It is experienced when we emphasize on how we acquire it and not what we get from it. This book hurls on simple concepts and elucidates simple facts in the form of examples and characters. The intellect is poignant and impressive because it clearly demarcates the two shades of our character-The good and the devil. This novel will continue to be pertinent in all times because of its foundation-It stands like the rock in the sea, dauntless and sturdy.
The other characters in the book are grey as we usually find individuals to be in real world. We are a composite blend of black and white and we do good as well as bad deeds and the ultimate manifestation of it is a heap of nothing which makes us forgettable and also undermines the success we get out of the good things we do in our lifetime.
Roark and Dominique are individualistic while the others play pivotal roles as individuals but they can bend or can let their values bend when needed. They never venture into their souls or have the quest to know themselves. That is why they are volatile.
Roark is strong and confident. He is rigid with principles but never in character. The others are rigid in character and love power and authority. They feel repentant after certain steps they take because of wrong ideals.
Roark and Dominique are atheists for they challenge the predictable dogmatic beliefs. They experience the spirit of theism through ethics and goodness. The others again fall prey to beliefs and conventional practices which makes them miserable failures in every walk of life.
All I can say after reading this book- It should be a vanguard of future and usher renaissance in thoughts. The universal virtues and ideology never die. In order to ensure that the sands of time don’t annihilate our existence from the face of this Earth we should embrace the religion of humanity and chaste disposition. A simple and honest life lived with sincerity and responsibility is the gateway to salvation.

The Power of Friendship

Life without a friend
Is like a road with no bends
Life cannot be straight
As emotions in life fluctuate

Life without a friend
Is like a garden with a dishevelled appearance
'Tis difficult to imagine life without a friend
'Tis impossible to remain single
As hearts of friends mingle
So always make a friend who's the semblance of your soul
As nothing in the world but friendship rules.

The meaning of Simple

There are some simple things around which our life revolves but we fail to acknowledge their significance. Sometimes they are the very reason for our existence and the basic foundation of happiness which gives meaning to our life.
Like the concern of our parents towards us. We do feel irritated at times because of the same but inside the heart of hearts we know they are perhaps the first and last ones to do so. Casually we do ridicule someone’s concern by saying-I guess my parents also don’t miss me so much ;-). This shows how much we crave for it yet fail to appreciate it.
The first drops of rain which glistens on the roof of old buildings and feels like the blessings from our forefathers. Though we don’t get the fresh rain drops nowadays because the greatest boon of pollution is acid rain today but the first showers wipe out the dirt and also cleanses our soul from the restlessness after the roaring summers.
We do get lots of gifts on our birthdays every year but the first gift always has a special place in our heart. The significance is great and incomparable, somewhat like the first born in the family.
The first time we fall in love and visualize an ideal date. I always wanted my ideal date to be on the roof of a sky scraper resting my head on my beloved’s shoulder and watching the stars through the telescope. That is the idea of celestial love for me.
Suddenly when I get a call from some old friend who stays only in memories but whose presence is buried in the sands of time gives me immense pleasure.
Some completely unknown   good soul leaves an imprint on our lives for standing by us in the most difficult times.
Going for a trip to some distant land where small rivulets flow by the green meadows and a herd of mountain goat graze there as if they are the humble conservationists of the paradise.
Reading a book  which symbolises reality and also typify characters which don’t  care  about  reality but value principles of life and hold on to truth till the last breath of their life.
We should all try to spend some time all by ourselves so that we can reflect upon what we see around us and what knowledge we gather from our stint with reality each day. Solitude is very necessary as it helps us in understanding ourselves by introspecting into our conscience.
I could have never penned down my thoughts if I had not spent quality time with myself.  Time and space for myself has helped me grow into a person I had always craved to become.
